Dental Treatment in a Hospital Setting

Oral rehabilitation at the hospital under general anesthesia is an option for patients needing extensive dental treatment, special needs, and/or have severe anxiety. Since a child will be treated in an operating room, all necessary treatment will be completed. It is recommended to treat limited decay while the child is under general anesthesia to avoid progression of decay, which may require additional treatment with anesthesia. Treatment will be done in an outpatient setting with Dr. Kierstin Kerr

Frequently asked questions

What Does My Medical Insurance Cover?

We will make a copy of your medical insurance card and submit that information to Franciscan Hospital on your behalf. If a copy of your medical insurance was not provided to our office at your most recent visit than you may upload a photo copy of your insurance card (front and back) and text it to us at: (855) 324-5982.

Your medical insurance should be verified by Franciscan Hospital and they will notify you directly of network status, approval of anesthesia and facility fees, co-pays and/or deductibles, if applicable. It is your responsibility to check with Franciscan Hospital for any medical insurance coverage or questions at (617) 254-3800  x1542.

What is the facility fee?

There is a non-refundable $395 facility fee that is not covered by insurance in order to schedule your child's hospital visit. This fee covers any evaluations, follow-up visits, and any applicable operating room fees Duxbury Children's Dentistry incurs from the hospital. This fee does not apply to any co-pays, deductibles and/or balances.

Is a COVID test required?

Yes, all patients must be tested within 72hrsof the visit with a PCR test (at home or rapid tests are not accepted). We recommend to test on the Saturday prior to your visit to be able to receive your results on time unless the testing site can guarantee the turn around time by Monday evening.  You will bring a copy of the negative results with you on the day of the hospital visit. If you receive a positive result, call our office immediately at (781) 934-7111.

IMPORTANT: Patients who test positive or previously have had COVID must reschedule 4 weeks from the positive test date per Franciscan Hospital Anesthesiology Dept.

What time should I arrive at the hospital on my surgery date?

Franciscan Hospital will call you the day prior with an arrival time as well as when to stop eating/drinking.

Are parents and siblings allowed to attend the hospital visit with the patient?

At this time, Franciscan Hospital allows anyone 18 years or older to attend the visit with the patient.

It is recommended to have 2 adults accompany your child to and from the hospital. One adult should remain next to the child during the drive home to ensure neck (airway) is upright and observe for vomiting.

Once your child is home, start introducing clear liquids and light foods. Make sure your child remains hydrated. Activity should be limited for 24 hours following general anesthesia, to prevent dizziness or injury. Your child may experience a sore throat or nose from the placement of the intubation tube with the general anesthesia. If your child experiences any discomfort or slight fever, you can give them Children's Tylenol as directed. For temperatures over 101F, call Dr. Kierstin Kerr.  If your child experiences severe vomiting or bleeding, go directly to the emergency room and please notify Dr. Kierstin Kerr.

Do I need a follow up visit with Dr. Kierstin after the hospital visit?

Not necessarily. Some patients schedule a 2 week follow up with Dr. Kierstin to evaluate the completed treatment. However, we will let you know on the day of the surgery if this appointment will be needed.
